Give me a virtual thumbs up if you’ve watched the movie “What’s Love Got to Do with It?” Man, that is one of my all-time favorite movies! The story of Tina’s life was certainly amazing, but I also love that movie because of one of my favorite actresses, Angela Bassett.
Angela starred in that movie when she was 35 years old. Her body was amazing, and I read that she trained really hard to get the physique she displayed in that movie.
Today Angela is 62 years old, and she is simply stunning. Angela Bassett is the person that I envision when I think of myself at 62 years old. She has been the vision ever since I decided to start my fitness journey. I know that I will never look exactly like her. We are different people with different physiques, but I aspire to create a physique like hers. I also know that she is very health conscious and she does not eat dairy products and other high carb foods (I’m working on that too).
I want you, right now, to imagine the kind of body you want. It’s okay that the type is represented in a person that you know, or have seen in the media. We live in a world where people aspire to be like others and that is okay. Do what works for you. It’s easy to say I want to lose weight, but if you don’t have a vision for what that would look like then it’s kind of like you’re flying blind.
So, who is it? Beyonce, Fantasia, Michelle Obama, Jill Scott, your mom, your best friend, your coworker…? I want you to think of that person’s physique the next time that you are exercising.
Now, I want you to create another image. If you know that you are significantly overweight (more than 10 pounds), I want you to imagine what your health may be like in 2 years if you don’t take action now. I know it can be a scary thought, but it’s something you should think about. I actually think the opposite of that when I’m working out. When I’m on the treadmill or have a weight in my hand, I imagine that I am preventing disease or burning fat that would be storing around my vital organs.
Try it today, tomorrow, and the next day. Imagine what you want to look like when you lose weight. Imagine what your doctor may say in 2 years if you don’t make changes now.
