Shout out to my Uniontown, AL seniors who have been participating in the Physical Activity for Life fitness program.
These 7 ladies have been participating in Zoom fitness sessions with me for the past 8 weeks and they have been super motivated and a ton of fun to work with. As a senior fitness instructor, I had the honor of facilitating the workouts for these ladies. Thanks to a grant made possible by the National Institute on Aging and the University of Alabama, these ladies volunteered to participate and now they want more!
Benefits of senior fitness:
- Improved flexibility
- Improved cardiorespiratory functioning
- Reduction and prevention of illness
- Improved mood and decreased depression
Not only did the program provide fitness instruction, which has so many benefits, but they also enjoyed the social aspect of meeting at their local community center to workout together. These ladies were given a free FitBit in order to track and be mindful of their daily steps. Each day that we met via Zoom, I asked them to tell me the number of steps they had achieved for the day. They really enjoyed me challenging them to get a few more hundred steps by the end of the day on our workout days.
If being independent as long as possible is important to you, then it’s imperative to maintain a exercise regiment. And most importantly for health, exercise can add years to our life.
