Weight loss and weight loss management is really one of the hardest goals to achieve. I mean, we all love food, and the unhealthiest foods always are the most delicious. Why did God make it this way…LOL. Why can’t we just eat what we want and keep a great body and figure? Well unfortunately, biology didn’t set things up that way for us. Food is fuel for energy and every calorie that doesn’t get burned through our natural metabolism will end up stored as fast if we don’t do something about it.

So what’s a girl, or guy to do? Well, we could burn off those extra calories that we don’t need so that they don’t compound and turn to fat, or we can enjoy the foods we love, in moderation, and participate in weekly detoxes in order to give our gut time to process the food we eat, as well as limit the amount of high-carb, ultra-processed foods through fasting.

What is a Detox and Fast?

Detoxing is very popular. In a nutshell, you’re giving your digestive system an internal cleaning by eating certain foods that are not heavy, but mostly natural. Think of a detox as a purposeful cleanse or laxative that uses whole foods, which are natural from earth and has nearly no processing, such as veggies, fruit, nuts, etc. When I detox I use green teas and smoothies, in addition to high fiber foods.

Fasting is also very popular, especially intermittent fasting. Most people think of religious fasting, but intermittent fasting for health has nothing to do with religion, although it will help you connect with your higher self and can cause you to use deep meditation and prayer as a way to focus on your end goal of completing the fast. Fasting is depriving your biological system of calories for a certain amount of time in order to allow processing of food that is already in your gut. Fasting can cause weight loss because your body uses stored fat when it isn’t getting the calories it need from food. It may sound weird but your body is eating itself during a fast. My favorite intermittent fast is the 16:8 fast. In this fast a person does not eat for 16 hours, only coffee, tea, water. This would be from 8 pm until 12 noon and then eat within the 8 hours from noon until 8 pm. This is a great way to lose and manage weight, especially if the foods chosen during the 8 hour block are whole foods that are comprised of the necessary macronutrients: fats, carbs, and proteins.

Not only can periodic and strategic detox and fasting promote weight loss, but it’s also great for health. Fasting can improve blood sugar in people with diabetes, fights inflammation which is a contributor to many chronic illnesses such as heart disease, improves blood pressure, triglycerides and cholesterol, aids in cancer prevention, and delays aging.

The truth is that many people don’t like the thought of working out to shed pounds. But, weight loss can still be achieved by slowly changing your diet and including a detox and fasting regimen.
